A quote which gives me comfort is the following from Lord of the Rings:

‘I wish it need not have happened in my time,’ said Frodo.

‘So do I,’ said Gandalf, ‘and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.’

I had just posted my Sleeping with Bread post yesterday when I saw the news headline about the shootings at Virginia Tech. I am sure I am experiencing a lot of the same emotions as others.

I was thinking that now might be a good time to do a group version of Sleeping with Bread. I thought that anyone who wanted to, could leave their response in the comments of this post (or post on their own blog). So, if you would like, you can answer the following questions. It might be a place to come together and remember the good along with the bad:

At a time like this, I find desolation in:

At a time like this, I find consolation in:

I find desolation in the fact that if someone wants to reap so much death and destruction, they can't really be stopped until they've killed or maimed several people.

I find consolation in the goodness of people who extend genuine sympathy and all kinds of support and assistance to the families of those killed.

At times like this, I find desolation in the thought that I have brought my children into a world where things like this happen.

At times like this, I find consolation in the hope that if I raise them right, my kids might help make the world a place where things like this won't happen.

I find terrible desolation in the fact that this world has become such a terrible place.

I find consolation in the fact that it is still beautiful, even in the face of so much horror.

I find terrible desolation in the violent anarchy that seems to be creeping closer and closer.
I find consolation in my faith, in my knowledge that so many other people want a good world too, in my family and friends.

I find desolation in the fact that nothing ever changes, and that destruction has befallen people since the beginning of time and will continue till the end.

I find consolation in the fact that nothing ever changes, and that people are basically good.

I find desolation in watching the horror and chaos play itself out for the world to watch--again and again.

I find consolation in knowing that goodness works quietly, everyday, all around me.

And I find great consolation in knowing that the power of the remote control is in my hands.

you won't believe this, or maybe you will, but I just finished writing my bread, then came over here and read this.

It may be more desolation than consolation
