I fell in to a burning ring of fire...

I was wrong.

There are not fires to the north, south, and west of me.

There are fires to the north, south, west, AND east of me.

Lest you become too alarmed. I cannot see any fire. I cannot see any smoke.

But I can smell smoke. The Air Quality Management District is advising all people to stay indoors as much as possible. The kids have to have recess, lunch and P.E. inside. Can you imagine how much fun their teachers are having?

Here is a handy little fire map I downloaded from a news site. I drew a wobbly little star in MS Paint to show our approximate location. We truly are in the middle of a ring of fire.

One thing on my mind during all this, other than my burning eyes and lungs, is all the firefighters who are working so hard and who are so overextended. A state of emergency was called for Southern California today. There are too few resources to fight this many fires, over such a large area, all at the same time. I'm not Catholic, but I might just ask the patron saint of firefighters, St. Florian, to intercede on behalf of the men and women of the California Fire services.

Ack! You guys need to come up here where there are NO fires. Of course, it does look like you could just drive west and stand in the ocean...
thanks for the lovely message last night! I'm pretty lazy about facebook, too.

Thanks for the update. I was thinking about you while watching the morning news.

Beck, it is less than 30 minutes to the beach--which is pretty nice.

SB, thanks for your thoughts. When I went out this morning, I can still smell smoke but it doesn't seem as hot. I need to turn on the news and see what the lastest status is.

Excellent map. I got a call from my aunt who lives in Iowa - she had an atlas out to see where I was located, and couldn't find me, so she just called: "Where are you? Are you ON FIRE???" Love her!

...and we have had 6 inches (confirmed) of rain the last three days.

Good grief! Does this really happen every fall?! You are not exactly bolstering my interest in moving to your state...

My heart breaks over this entire situation.

Any ideas...anything we can do? You need anything? Oxygen masks?

(HUGS)

Please keep posting so we know you are all right.

Emily, the fires are on a scale with those four years ago. We have some fires every year, but they are not usually as bad as this--pinky swear!

Julie, we are really doing fine. If you have some magic solution for dealing with kids who have been cooped up inside during hot weather, THAT I could use! ;)

There are several thousands taking refuge at shelters, many of them at the San Diego Chargers stadium. I don't know eactly what kind of help can be provided for them via the Red Cross, etc.

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear that you and your family are safe.

How close do the fires have to come before you would be evacuated? How close are they now?

I'll keep you in my thoughts.

So many of my bloggy friends live in CA & I've been praying and hoping that *everyone* remains safe, that the firefighters get help, and the fires die out.
Thanks for putting the map up - the visual is helpful for me, for whatever reason.

Sorry that I have not been around lately. But reading your last few posts & why you have been away a bit as well offers me comfort...as school has been keeping me away from blogging as well.

Hope all is well & hopefully I'll be able to continue my regulary scheduled rounds :)

Here's to St. Florian!

Me too, I've been busy, sorry I haven't been around, but you are in my thoughts. I hope the fires go out on all fronts soon :)

Any updates on the fire situation? Did St Florian come through?
